Philosophy:
Not causing harm, causing benefit, presenting things as they are as seen through the eyes of serendipitous encounters with the world to create two-dimensional images with some aesthetic appeal that have the possibility of sparking a story in the viewer’s mind. Plus, it’s fun to play.
Style:
Going on expeditions to explore the world with no particular expectations, accompanied by my current friend, a 10-megapixel Canon Rebel and wide-angle, telescopic, and “regular” lenses, I am particularly seduced by the elements and various milieus – water, earth, air, and fire (aka life) -- beaches, plains, mountains, oceans, streams and lakes. If the opportunity presents itself, I also enjoy capturing creatures on film. I have been known to get caught by objects or people that capture my eyes.
Technique:
I use Adobe Creative Suite with Lightroom to rather minimally perk up the resulting photos. I very seldom crop or alter an image. What I see is generally what you get. I might put a spin on it with the title. I use the best quality glossy or matte paper I can afford, as well as inks and archival mats and frames.
Background:
I have photo credits in several books and magazines, including Atlantic Business Magazine, the Shambhala Sun, and the North End News. I have exhibited many photographs at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Sales and Rental Gallery, including at a group show in November-December 2008. I also paint and had a solo show of my Sumi-e brush work at the Veith Street Gallery.
I have more than thirty years experience as a production editor/graphic designer, writer, painter and now, photographer. I have a B.A. in Psychology and Anthropology from UC Berkeley, and a Bachelor of Journalism from Kings College in Halifax.
